Are you a university student? Do you know what you want to major it? Or what field you want to work in, in the future? As a current university student, I have heard all these questions from others. And I’m here to tell you it’s ok if you don’t have an answer for them.

When I first started university, I thought I had it all figured out and went straight into taking classes for my decided major. This quickly made me realize that it was not the right major for me. So, I’m here to offer some tips I used to help me find my current major.

5 Helpful steps to finding a major:

1. Make a list of subjects you are interested in.

By making this list before entering university, you can an idea of what field you may

want to study in. This can help you gather information on different subjects you may want to study and see if they are a good fit for you.

2. Write down classes you enjoyed taking.

While taking prerequisites, I think it’s a good idea to write down what classes you enjoyed taking the most and figuring out what field of study they are in. I think this is useful because it can help you narrow down the field of studies you are interested in.

3. Take more classes.

When you find a subject, you may be interested in, the best thing to do is to pursue it. This can help you advance toward making a decision on your major and taking classes towards the major itself.

4. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone.

It may be a bit contradicting but taking classes out of you comfort zone can actually turn out to be very helpful when deciding a major. This can help you find a major you may not have even considered taking.

5. Don’t be afraid to change your mind.

I cannot stress this step. If you don’t enjoy the subject, you’re in don’t be afraid to try studying something else. There is nothing worse than paying for a subject you don’t have an interest in and won’t enjoy working in when you graduate.

They may not seem like much, but they are very helpful. Especially step 5, I used this step many times throughout my university career. I changed my major multiple times and I’m very glad I did because it helped me choose the majors I’m currently taking. These steps helped me find two subjects I love, and I hope they can help you as well.
